That said the brown parasite can cause serious damage to your car if it gets to the frame components, so you need to get rid of it before it does.<\/p>\n<p>To be able to successfully get rid of rust (and hopefully keep it at bay) it\u2019s imperative to first understand what causes it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Causes Of Rust<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rust is caused by a chemical reaction of iron and its alloys to oxygen and water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1518\" saltwater and winter road treatments speeding up the whole rusting process.<\/p>\n<p>There are broadly three stages of rust that develops on cars: <strong>surface rust<\/strong>,<strong> scale<\/strong> and <strong>penetration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, as you\u2019ll soon discover, getting rid of rust is not half the daunting task it seems to be.<\/p>\n<p>All it takes is a little preparation, patience and a few readily-available tools and materials.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s all you need to know about the different methods of removing rust from your car, starting with basic prep.<\/p>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Preparation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Regardless of which method you choose to work with, the following steps are highly advisable for safety purposes and to prevent further damage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to wear <em>safety glasses<\/em>, <em>gloves<\/em> and a <em>dust mask<\/em> (though a <em>respirator<\/em> is advisable while using a grinder)<\/li>\n<li>Use <em>masking paper <\/em>to mask clean spots to prevent them from getting dusty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Surface Rust<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Surface rust mainly occurs when paint breaks down due to mechanical or UV damage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1516\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/surface-rust.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/surface-rust.jpg 600w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/surface-rust-300x200.jpg 300w\" alt=\"surface rust\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/>It doesn\u2019t usually pose a problem as it is largely dependent on alloy composition and metal thickness.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is highly recommended to correct surface rust as and when it occurs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Solution 1: Rust Remover<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><em>Materials\/tools required:<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Liquid or aerosol rust remover or rust converter, sandpaper, grease and wax remover soap, rag, primer, spray paint<\/p>\n<h4><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1020\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/best-rust-converter-v-147x300.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/best-rust-converter-v-147x300.jpg 147w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/best-rust-converter-v-501x1024.jpg 501w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/best-rust-converter-v.jpg 734w\" alt=\"krud kutter\" width=\"147\" height=\"300\" \/>Method:<\/em><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Spray\/brush the remover onto the affected area (as per the directions on the packaging) and let it sit for a few minutes<\/li>\n<li>Wipe off residue with a clean rag<\/li>\n<li>Remove any residual rust with sandpaper<\/li>\n<li>Clean the surface with a grease and wax remover soap<\/li>\n<li>Air dry the surface<\/li>\n<li>Spray a light to medium coat of primer and let it dry for an hour (three such coats should suffice)<\/li>\n<li>Spray about five-six coats of paint within plenty of time in between to prevent drips<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the paint coats are thinner than those of the primer<\/li>\n<li>Spray the clear coat<\/li>\n<li>Wait a sandpaper, rag<\/p>\n<h4><em>Method:<\/em><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Use sandpaper to remove any rust in the affected area that is loose<\/li>\n<li>Use a vinegar-soaked rag over the area by holding it down for several minutes (the longer you hold it the more rust it will dissolve)<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the process as many times as required to remove all the rust from your car<\/li>\n<li>Follow steps 6-10 from Solution 1.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Scale<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The underlying cause behind scale rust is that rust molecules are physically larger than those of iron or steel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1517\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rusty-dodge.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, fail to remove rust when it is at surface level, it forms bubbles.<\/p>\n<p>It begins to expand and flake away, thereby exposing base metal that soon begins corroding, causing a serious problem.<\/p>\n<p>Removing this kind of rust demands significantly more effort and skill than surface rust, hence it is advisable not to let the rust develop till this stage at all.<\/p>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Solution 3: Body Filler<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><em>Materials\/tools required: <\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Grinder with sanding wheel, self-etching primer, fiberglass-reinforced body filler, fine grit sandpaper, wax and grease remover, spray paint<\/p>\n<h4><em>Method:<\/em><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Use the grinder to remove surface rust while taking care not to apply too much pressure<\/li>\n<li>Use a grease remover to clean the area<\/li>\n<li>Use the filler for the holes and let it cure completely<\/li>\n<li>Sand the filler with sandpaper then clean with wax and grease remover<\/li>\n<li>Use self-etching primer and leave to dry<\/li>\n<li>Follow steps 7-10 from Solution 1<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Penetration<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In case you haven\u2019t dealt with the rust in its scale stage, it will advance to an even more problematic stage called \u2018penetration\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1519\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rust-hole.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rust-hole.jpg 600w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rust-hole-300x182.jpg 300w\" alt=\"rust hole\" width=\"600\" height=\"363\" \/>In this stage, the base metal of the car gradually flakes away leaving holes in its place.<\/p>\n<p>Having a car reach this stage leaves you with two options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>replace the entire affected panel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cut out the affected parts and weld in \u2018patch panels\u2019 in place of them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this stage the car is highly susceptible to crashes and further damage as its frame has been severely affected.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, your best bet would be <em>consulting a professional and getting it repaired at a repair facility<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"message_box announce\">\n<p>Rust Prevention<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Arguably the best way to deal with rust is to prevent it from accumulating on your car altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Prevention is indeed better than cure, especially when you\u2019ve invested thousands of dollars in your car and the alternative is spending hundreds more on ensuring it looks brand-new for years.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, these are the most effective ways of preventing rust from developing on your car:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash your car regularly and thoroughly<\/li>\n<li>Keep the underside clean from dirt, road grime and salts as these lead to corrosion<\/li>\n<li>Check the drain holes that are present along the bottom of doors and rocker panels (that allow rainwater to flow out) regularly<\/li>\n<li>Use a pipe cleaner to thoroughly clean these holes<\/li>\n<li>Use multiple coats of wax, especially during winter months to protect paint, road grime and water<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t let snow and chemicals accumulate while driving on snowy or salty roads<\/li>\n<li>Use rust prevention
